Kraak Ware: A Unique and Historic Chinaware Found in Thailand

Updated: Nov 29, 2023

Kraak Ware is a type of Chinese porcelain that was produced during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The name is thought to be a corruption of the Portuguese word "carrack," a type of ship that was used to transport porcelain from China to Europe.

Kraak Ware is characterized by its distinctive style, which includes the following features:

  • It is typically cobalt blue, a color that was popular in the Ming Dynasty.

  • It is divided into panels, each of which features a different design.

  • The rim of the bowl is often shaped like a crescent moon or lotus blossom.

In addition to plates, bowls, and vases, Kraak Ware can also be divided into two main shapes: Chinese-style vessels and a special type called "klappmuts," which is a soup bowl.

Kraak Ware has been found in many locations in Thailand, including Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Both Chinese-style vessels and klappmuts have been found.

One example of Kraak Ware found in Thailand is a bowl with a design of a scholar, a deer, and a crane, which were popular motifs during the reign of Emperor Wanli (1573-1620).

Kraak Ware is an example of Chinese porcelain that reflects the influence of Western culture during the Ming Dynasty. In particular, it reflects the influence of Portuguese and Dutch culture, which demonstrates the trade and cultural relations between China and the West during this period.

Kraak Ware is also a beautiful and historically significant piece of porcelain, especially those found in Thailand, which date back to over 500 years ago.

The name "klappmuts" is a homophone of the Dutch word for "seal." This means that if you are looking for a Kraak Ware bowl in the Netherlands, you may accidentally be looking for a seal.
